Setting and Achieve Your Goals with the "GOAL" Formula

Updated: 2 days ago

Hey everyone,

The Positive Polynesian here! Life can get overwhelming, juggling college, careers, or even raising a family.

We all have challenges; sometimes, life gets tougher and more demanding. But today, I want to dive in on "Setting and achieving personal goals."

At one point in our lives, we all have committed to work towards our goals. We have succeeded at some, but for others, we've lost momentum and drive to make any progress. Setting and completing goals comes with a lot of emotions. You may worry you will fall into old habits and quickly give up.

But fear not, friends! Today, we're diving into what I think is a powerful yet simple strategy for turning those dreams into reality: The GOAL Formula. Let's break it down together:

"G" is for Get Specific:

Setting SMART Goals

Vague aspirations like "get a better job" won't get you far. Imagine wanting a delicious meal but telling the waiter, "I want food." Confusing, right? Setting practical goals requires similar detail.

Remember that conversation between the Cheshire Cat and good old Alice from Alice in Wonderland?

Alice: "Can you tell me which direction I should take from here?"

Cheshire Cat: "That depends largely on where you want to end up."

Alice: "I don't mind where."

Cheshire Cat: "In that case, any direction will do."

Not being specific in what you want to accomplish will pull you in many directions but not where you want to be.

Science Backs Specificity: Studies have shown that specific goals lead to more remarkable achievement. They provide a clear roadmap, making progress tracking and motivation easier.

Alright, I can't be the positive Polynesian without sharing a story/legend from our Pacific Ocean. Here is a story that carries a similar theme involving direction and purpose.

Maori mythology is a tale of Māui, a legendary hero and trickster who often had to make crucial decisions about his direction and goals.

One such story is about Māui’s MāMāui'si'to journey to slow down the sun. Māui and his brothers set out on a journey to catch the sun, which was moving too quickly across the sky and not allowing enough daylight for the people to complete their tasks. Before setting off, Māui had to decide which way to go and how to accomplish this feat. Unlike Alice, who didn't know where she went, Māui had a clear goal: to lengthen the day.

Māui: "Brothers, which direction do we pursue to capture the sun?"

One of his brothers: "That relies on our objective, Māui."

Māui:" We aim" to extend daylight for all."

Another brother: "Then we must head east, to where the sun rises."

This story emphasizes the necessity of having a clear goal and direction, similar to the lesson in the conversation between Alice and the Cheshire Cat.

Pretty cool, right? Now, to get you an idea of what setting effective goals could sound like and here are some examples:

Graduation Goal:

  • Instead of "I want to graduate," you could say: "I want to graduate with honors in Computer Science by May 2025, completing my capstone project on [specific project topic]."

Job Landing Goal:

  • Instead of "I want a good job," you could say: "I want to land a software engineer position at a reputable tech company in Hawaii that provides a competitive salary, health insurance, and opportunities for professional growth.

Financial Stability Goal:

  • Instead of "I want to be financially stable," you could say: "I want to create a budget that allows me to save 15% of my income each month, achieve financial independence within ten years, and comfortably afford a vacation to Japan next year."

Become Better Parent Goal:

  • Instead of "I want to be a better parent," you could say: "I want to implement a consistent bedtime routine for my children, establish stronger communication with them, and dedicate at least 30 minutes each day for quality playtime."

Personal Growth Goal:

  • Instead of "I want to be healthier," you could say: "I want to join a gym and exercise three times a week, meal prep healthy lunches for the workweek, and go for a 30-minute walk in nature every weekend."

Action Time! Grab a pen and paper. It's your turn to put a goal into motion.

Let's create a goal using the SMART GOAL method. This method helps you be more specific and detailed when planning out your goals.

  • Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve? Be clear and concise.

  • Measurable: How will you know you've achieved your goal? Define success with metrics.

  • Achievable: Is your goal realistic but still challenging? Set yourself up for success.

  • Relevant: Does this dream resonate with your bigger picture?

  • Time-bound: Set up deadlines to keep on track.

How to Monitor Progress: Regularly review your SMART Goal. Ask yourself if you need to adjust anything to help keep you on track.

"O" is for Obstacles: Anticipate and Adapt

Setting up a contingency plan

Life throws curveballs, and sometimes, those curveballs can derail your goals. The key is to embrace obstacles and to anticipate and navigate them effectively.

The Power of Positivity: Studies have found that a positive mindset leads to overcoming challenges and achieving goals. Maintaining a positive outlook allows you to see obstacles as opportunities for growth and adaptation.

Developing a Contingency Plan: One potential obstacle might be fierce competition for your goal. Your Contingency Plan could involve networking with professionals, attending relevant workshops, or taking online courses to enhance your skill set.

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Identify the Obstacle: What challenges might prevent you from achieving your goal? Be proactive and anticipate potential roadblocks.

  2. Brainstorm Solutions: Develop a plan B (or even C!) What alternative strategies can you employ if faced with specific obstacles?

  3. Adaptability is Key: Be bold and adjust your approach along the way. Life is unpredictable, and flexibility is crucial for success.

Word of Motivation: Obstacles are stepping stones, not roadblocks. Learn from them, adapt your strategy, and keep moving forward. You can still achieve your goal! See great words of motivation ;)

Monitor Progress: Reflect on how you handled challenges. Did your contingency plan work effectively? If not, analyze what went wrong and refine your approach for future obstacles. The most growth comes from this step if you learn and apply what you learned for the future.

"A" is for Action: Take Consistent Steps

Small wins for BIG results

Now comes the exciting part – taking action and remembering the most detailed plan remains just a wish list without concrete steps to bring it to life.

Breaking it Down: Divide your ambitious goal into smaller, manageable tasks. This way, it won't seem so daunting or overwhelming, it'll seem more achievable. Develop a weekly action plan with small goals and set a dedicated calendar to visualize where you should be on that day. This will help you stay on track to complete your overall goal. This is just like going up a flight of stairs, even though you've only taken one step, you're still farther than standing at the bottom of the stairs. See, you're already making progress!

Word of Motivation: Small, consistent steps lead to BIG results. Remember never to underestimate the power of daily action. The start is always the hardest, but once you start, there is nothing stopping you.

Monitor Progress: Did you complete your action steps this week? Celebrate your wins, no matter how small!

L is for Learning: never stop it.

Continuous learning

Continuous learning promotes a growth mindset, where challenges are seen as opportunities for improvement and growth. This fosters resilience and a willingness to keep moving forward when faced with setbacks. The reality is that successful goal achievement often involves ongoing learning. New skills might be needed, information might change, or unforeseen challenges might arise. Learning and adaptation become essential tools for navigating these situations.

"Atomic Habits" by James Clear emphasizes the power of small, incremental changes in building habits that lead to significant improvements over time. I became aware of my daily habits and focused on areas I needed to improve. I became better at time management and saw improvements in my personal and professional life quality.

Copy and paste the following bullet points for motivation to keep moving forward to achieving your goals!

It's okay to make mistakes. Mistakes are inevitable, and they're valuable learning opportunities. See them as stepping stones, not roadblocks.
It's okay not to know something. Nobody knows everything! Embrace the chance to learn new things and expand your knowledge.
It's okay to feel challenged. Challenges push you to grow and improve. Don't shy away from them; embrace the opportunity to rise to the occasion.
It's okay to take small steps. Big goals can feel overwhelming. To manage them better, break them down into smaller, manageable tasks and celebrate each achievement along the way.
It's okay to ask for help. We all need support sometimes. Do not hesitate to contact family, friends, professionals, or mentors for guidance.
It's okay to change your mind. Your goals and priorities may evolve over time. Be flexible and adjust your course as needed.
It's okay to celebrate small wins. Every step forward is worth recognizing. Take the time to acknowledge your progress, no matter how small.
It's okay to have setbacks. Setbacks are a normal part of the learning process. Don't let them discourage you; pick yourself up and keep moving forward.
It's okay to focus on the journey. Reaching your goals is essential, but the journey is an entire of valuable learning experiences. Enjoy the process of growth.
It's okay to be yourself. Embrace your unique talents and strengths. There's no need to compare yourself to others; focus on your personal growth.
